Rheumatoid arthritis may links to depression

May 20th, 2010

The researchers at the University of North Carolina tell that the patients with rheumatoid arthritis are two times as likely to feel depression but they are unlikely to consult to a doctor about it. In that study, researchers found that almost 11% of rheumatoid arthritis patients had moderately severe to severe sign of depression, demonstrating a distressful link between depression and rheumatoid arthritis.

Those who did were always the ones to bring up the topic – not the physician. When it was brought up, it was often not discussed at any length.

Living with a chronic disease affects a person in more ways than just the physical. Limitations on activities, the need for medications, and daily pain, can all play a role in a person’s mental state of being. It is important for patients and their Rheumatologist to recognize that depression can become an issue.

If you feel as if you may need to discuss depression with your doctor, let him/her know. Explain how you are feeling; ask if it could be a result of your medication. You may also consider making an appointment with your primary physician or ask for referral.

Rheumatoid arthritis can bring many changes to your life. Those changes may result in feelings that are difficult to express. Be open with your doctor about those feelings.
