Lupus causes at a glance

March 9th, 2010

lupus_causesThe main cause of lupus is an autoimmune condition, it happens when the immune system react abnormally. Instead of attacking foreign enemy, such as virus or bacteria, the antibodies start attacking the body’s own healthy tissue and cells.

The cause of autoimmune is still unknown. However, there appears to be something that triggers the immune system to attack various areas of the body. That is why suppressing the immune system is one of the main forms of treatment. Finding the cause is the object of major research efforts.

Inherited genes, certain drugs, viruses, and ultraviolet light and hormones may all play a part in lupus disease developing.

  • Inherited genes. An identical twin of people with lupus reported has a threefold to tenfold greater risk of getting lupus than a non-identical twin, meanwhile first-degree relatives (father, mother, sister, or brother) of someone with lupus have an eightfold to ninefold increased risk of having lupus compared with the general public.
  • Drugs. Certain drugs have been associated with lupus inducing, the new biological agents used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, infliximab (Remicade), and adalimumab (Humira) are some examples. Commonly, lupus disease that is caused by a drug lupus inducing will go away once the medication is stopped.
  • Environment factors. Meanwhile an inherited genes may increase the chance in lupus developing, it takes some kind of environmental trigger to set off the illness or to bring on a flare, such as: Ultraviolet rays from the sun or fluorescent light bulb, cold or a viral infection, exhaustion and emotional stress.
  • Hormone. Estrogen plays a role in lupus severity. Many women with lupus note that symptoms may be worse after ovulation and better at the beginning of the menstrual period. This may refers that estrogen somehow regulates the severity of lupus. However, it does not mean that estrogen, or any other hormone for that matter, causes lupus directly.

The cause of lupus has not been quite specific as yet, though there are many assumptions made about the disease due to the lack of proper information but a brief outline has been made which had rounded in on factors that would be reason for lupus. Among the factors mentioned here inherited genes is found to be the reason behind most of the cases and the other one that's most prevalent is the environmental factors.
