Human genome lupus drug benlysta has snagged in one goal

Human genome lupus drug benlysta has snag in one goalHuman Genome Sciences and GlaxoSmithKline as their co-developing says that the lupus drug called benlysta fell short of secondary goals in human trials, though it was successful in other trials. Benlysta is the name of a lupus treatment that is undergoing clinical testing. The drug did not produce results statistically different from the placebo group during the 76th week of the trial.

There were still adverse events, but these were comparable to what was experienced by the placebo group. Benlysta had a response rate of 39% as opposed to a 32% response rate for the placebo plus standard care.

The reason that benlysta is so important is because no lupus treatment drug has been effectively approved in 50 years.  This means that for the last 50 years, people suffering from lupus disease have had the same treatments. Discovering a new treatment available could help alleviate some of the symptoms of the disease.

Nowdays lupus can be treated with NSAIDS such as aspirin and Tylenol.  Antimalarials, immunosuppressives and corticosteroids are also used to treat the disease.  People who diagnosed with lupus need to speak with their doctor about the best treatment options for them.
